On March 11, 1903, a subscription list was started to build a Catholic church in Norwalk. August Brieske subscribed and contributed the largest amount which is why the church was named St. Augustine. August also donated the statue of St. Augustine which still graces the main altar today.

The Mother Church of Monroe County Wisconsin, Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish was established with the arrival of the first settlers at Saint Mary's Ridge in 1856. The first Catholic church in the county was built at Saint Mary's Ridge two years later, in 1858. A second, larger church was built in 1869 as the parish had grown to nearly 100 families. By 1897, however, that church became too small for the ever-growing parish family.

In the spring of 1916, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish was formed and became a mission church to Saints Peter and Paul Parish at Pine Hollow. Fifty-one families attended the first mass celebrated on Nov. 12th of that year in a rented hall.
